Reining in the IRS and Protecting Taxpayers

On June 14th, I voted to pass H.R. 5053, the Preventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act. This bill would eliminate the requirement for charities, churches, and other non-profit groups to report confidential donor information to the IRS. It is critical that we stop the IRS from using unnecessarily gathered information for politically motivated attacks on law abiding citizens and conservative groups. The targeting of individuals and groups based solely on their political beliefs is just another example of aggressive overreach by this administration that Congress must check.

Further, the IRS under this administration has abused a process known as civil asset forfeiture. Civil asset forfeiture was originally designed to help catch drug runners and terrorists, but it has been and continues to be abused to punish farmers and small business owners trying to make a living. As a co-sposnor of the RESPECT Act, I believe action is needed to prevent the IRS from arbitrarily seizing legally-earned funds from hard working Americans. There are more than 600 pending cases involving individuals and families who have been forced to forfeit their assets. Those who have been forced to forfeit their hard earned dollars to the government without any opportunity for recourse or due process need to be recognized and reimbursed.

Constituents visit Washington D.C.

This week I met with several families from across the 24th District excited to learn about our nation’s history and see the sights Washington D.C. has to offer. I had the pleasure of showing these families my favorite parts of the Capitol and share the experiences I’ve had working in Congress.

I took questions and comments on what I can do to better represent them, and the rest of the 24th District here in Congress. If you’re thinking about traveling to Washington, D.C. to experience the rich culture and history it has to offer, don’t hesitate to reach out to Lindsay Hurley in my DC office at 202.225.6605.

Remembering my Dad on Father's Day

With Father’s Day quickly approaching, I want to take a minute to remember my hero and role model, Hobart Clay Marchant, my dad. Parents are often inspirations for their children, and my father was my lifelong hero. My dad’s service to his country is representative of his entire generation and the work ethic and patriotism they passed on to their children.

My father always believed in America and her future, and was influential in my decision to enter public service. I would not be the man I am today had my dad not been a guiding force in my childhood, youth and adulthood. Happy Father’s Day from my family to yours.
