I hope you have a safe and happy Fourth of July with your family and loved ones. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, let us reflect upon the great struggle to secure freedom from tyranny and honor the courage and sacrifice of all those who have risen up to defend the founding principles of these United States.

  • Response to Supreme Court Amnesty Ruling (full statement here): The authority of the legislative branch and the security of this country were threatened by President Obama’s unilateral amnesty. In March, the People’s House stood up for the rule of law when we filed a rare amicus brief in the Supreme Court challenging the president's unconstitutional amnesty. Lower federal courts had taken the same position in halting implementation of the president’s executive amnesty and I was pleased to see the Supreme Court do the same.
  • Response to Supreme Court Texas HB2 Ruling (full statement here): The Supreme Court has once again failed to protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers. It is extremely disappointing that the Court has put its ideology above the will of the people of Texas. The Texas law ensured that every woman could receive care and provided for the implementation of safe and uniform standards that would help prevent the next Kermit Gosnell horror.
  • The House Tax Reform Task Force recently released its “A Better Way: A Pro-Growth Tax Code For All Americans.” This blueprint is the first step in achieving tax reform that reigns in the IRS and makes the tax code simpler, flatter, and fairer. During my time in Congress, I have stressed the need to simplify the tax code, lower rates, and ease the growing strain on American businesses. America’s global competitors have taken great strides to make their tax policies more conducive to job creation and long-term economic growth. The United States has not kept pace and we now have the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world. Many companies in the 24th district of Texas are being forced to put more focus on managing their tax burdens, and less on finding new and innovative ways to grow their businesses. We need to address these issues now by making our tax code more competitive in the global economy and more supportive of job growth here at home (full statement here).
